The Wikipedia phenomenon of retracted scientific papers lingering on the platform for years is a fascinating and concerning issue. While Wikipedia is celebrated for its agility in covering breaking news and high-salience events, this study reveals a slower and uneven response to post-publication knowledge failures. The median time for a correction was 3.68 years, which is substantial and could "quietly misinform millions of people." This raises a deeper question: how can we ensure that Wikipedia, a trusted source of information for many, remains accurate and reliable in the face of retractions? The answer lies in a fundamental disconnect between retraction data and the Wikipedia community's workflow. Wikipedia editors are not expected to continuously monitor every citation for new retractions, which is an unrealistic expectation. Instead, automated tools like RetractionBot and browser extensions like LibKey Nomad can accelerate the correction process. However, the total number of cited scientific papers across Wikipedia shouldn't be compared to the total number of retracted citations. Retractions are incredibly rare in the scientific world at large. The study also highlights the varying correction times based on academic field, with physical science citations corrected the fastest and life sciences and health sciences citations taking significantly longer. This points to a need for more specialized attention and resources for certain fields. In my opinion, the key to addressing this issue lies in improving the Wikipedia community's workflow and leveraging technology to automate the correction process. We must also recognize the limitations of Wikipedia as a source of information and encourage users to verify claims and sources critically. The presence of retracted citations on Wikipedia is a reminder that no source of information is perfect and that we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of knowledge and truth.
