Michael Holloway Appointed Chair of USATF High Performance - What it Means for Team USA! (2026)

Big news for U.S. Track & Field! The sport's governing body, USA Track & Field (USATF), has just appointed Coach Michael “Mouse” Holloway as the new Chair of its High Performance Division. This is a significant move, and here's why it matters.

This appointment, finalized at the USATF annual meeting in Orlando in December 2025, places Holloway at the helm of a crucial division. This division oversees three key sport committees: Men’s Track & Field, Women’s Track & Field, and Race Walking. It also encompasses the Joint Development Group, which includes development committees and the Long Distance Running Division.

In his volunteer role, Holloway will be the architect of a high-performance strategy. His mission? To ensure USATF provides the essential resources, planning, and cutting-edge infrastructure needed to keep Team USA at the top of the global athletics game, especially leading up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Holloway's enthusiasm for the new role is palpable. He stated, “I have dedicated my life and career to building championship programs...This new volunteer leadership role allows me to contribute my extensive experience, knowledge, and passion at the highest level.” He brings a wealth of experience, including coaching the University of Florida's men's and women's teams to a combined 14 NCAA team titles.

He's no stranger to the Olympic stage either. Holloway served as the head coach for Team USATF at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and was an assistant coach at the 2012 London Olympics. He understands the unique pressures and challenges faced by elite U.S. track and field athletes at the global level.

One of Holloway's crowning achievements includes the historic “NCAA title slam” in 2022, where both his men’s and women’s outdoor track teams clinched the title. His coaching prowess has earned him 14 USTFCCCA Coach of the Year awards and another 14 SEC Coach of the Year awards.

Before Holloway’s appointment, Sue Humphrey, a highly respected jumps coach, served as the interim chair. USATF CEO Max Siegel expressed gratitude for Humphrey's dedication, highlighting her contribution during a critical period.

Holloway's term begins immediately and will run through December 2028.

But here's where it gets interesting... What does this mean for the future of U.S. track and field? Will Holloway's strategies lead to even more dominance on the world stage?

And this is the part most people miss... Understanding the role of USATF is key. It's the national governing body for track & field, long-distance running, and race walking in the U.S. They're the official organizers for elite athletes (like Team USA at Olympics), youth programs (like Junior Olympics), and grassroots events, setting rules, certifying courses, and managing memberships for athletes, coaches, and fans across all ages and abilities.
