McDonald’s $8 Nugget Combo Sparks Backlash: Are Fast Food Prices Out of Control? (2026)

McDonald’s $8 Nugget Deal Sparks Outrage Online — But What’s Really Going On?

McDonald’s recently tried to capture the attention of budget-conscious diners with a new $8 10-piece Chicken McNugget combo, but instead of praise, the fast-food giant was met with a flood of online complaints. People criticized the price, questioned the quality, and grumbled about long wait times — leaving McDonald’s in a tricky position.

Earlier this year, McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, publicly acknowledged that some combo meals at the chain were priced too high, signaling a push to roll out more affordable options for customers feeling the pinch of rising living costs. But when the new November promotion for an $8 nugget meal went live, it didn’t land as the company hoped.

On November 14, McDonald’s posted the limited-time offer on X, its social media platform, only to see the post inundated with criticism. Commenters complained about the combo’s value, saying things like, “Since when is $8 a good price for 10 little nuggets, a handful of fries, and a drink?” Many vowed to skip McDonald’s altogether, citing concerns ranging from inflation-driven price increases and declining quality to slow drive-through service.

The company tried to respond by asking upset users to share their contact details via direct message to address their complaints. Still, the post amassed hundreds of negative reactions, showing just how sensitive customers have become to price and perceived value.

McDonald’s did not provide an immediate response to Fortune’s request for comment, citing the holiday weekend.

This backlash comes as McDonald’s attempts to restore its image as an affordable dining option, after several price increases have drawn widespread attention. Since 2019, the chain has faced criticism over rising menu costs. Last year, even House Republicans highlighted these increases on X, claiming that, under President Joe Biden, prices for a medium fries jumped 167.6% and a Big Mac meal soared 103.5%.

McDonald’s disputed these claims, clarifying that the average menu price rose around 40%, not doubled, attributing most of the increase to higher operational costs — including up to 40% raises for restaurant staff and rising prices for food and paper supplies.

Over the past few years, value-conscious customers have increasingly voiced frustrations about McDonald’s prices online. In 2023, a viral X post featuring an $18 Big Mac combo ignited debates about whether the chain had become unaffordable. McDonald’s USA president Joe Erlinger responded, saying the expensive combo was an outlier and asserting that the brand’s pricing generally remained in line with inflation.

Even CEO Kempczinski admitted that combo meals exceeding $10 were "negatively shaping value perceptions." During the company’s second-quarter earnings call, he stressed that the menu board is the "single biggest driver" shaping how customers perceive McDonald’s value. "We’ve got to get that fixed," he emphasized.

Traffic from lower-income U.S. consumers fell sharply in the first quarter, with middle-income traffic declining by nearly the same margin. Kempczinski attributed this to the combined pressures of inflation and growing economic uncertainty weighing on these groups.

Despite the criticism, McDonald’s reported a 3.6% increase in global comparable sales in the third quarter, with U.S. sales up 2.4%. Kempczinski highlighted that "we’re fueling momentum by delivering everyday value and affordability, menu innovation, and compelling marketing that continue to bring customers through our doors."

But here’s where it gets controversial: With so many online complaints about pricing and value, can McDonald’s truly balance higher costs and customer expectations? Is $8 really too much for a nugget meal, or are customers overreacting? Share your thoughts — do you think McDonald’s is getting its value perception right, or is it missing the mark completely?
