Bold start: A rookie spark is emerging in Sacramento, and Maxime Raynaud’s breakout run could be the turning point the Kings need to unlock their season. The Kings have had a rocky start to the 2025-26 campaign, but a few bright spots keep fans hopeful and curious.
Veteran guard Russell Westbrook has made a meaningful impact since joining in the offseason, providing steady minutes and leadership. At the same time, several young players are beginning to show real potential as they start to carve out meaningful roles. Despite a 6-18 record, Sacramento has flashed signs of life—most notably in a tight defeat to the surging Oklahoma City Thunder, who sit at 23-1.
Among those encouraging developments is first-year center Maxime Raynaud. Since earning a larger role in recent weeks, the 22-year-old has begun to shape a solid rookie campaign with consistent contributions.
In his last five games, Raynaud has reached double figures in four of them, highlighted by a 25-point performance against Houston and a double-double in a win over Miami, plus a strong showing on Monday night. In the loss to Indiana, Raynaud still delivered 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists on efficient shooting (5-of-8 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the line).
That followed a standout effort against the Heat, where he notched 12 points, 10 rebounds, an assist, two blocks, and zero turnovers. While he did have three turnovers Monday, his positive impact—especially his ability to finish plays—was clear.
Raynaud appears to have developed solid on-court chemistry with Westbrook. The bigger guard has fed the rookie several dump-off passes, allowing Raynaud to operate effectively as a finisher. At 7-foot-1 and 250 pounds, he fits well into that role, providing a versatile option in the frontcourt.
Beyond scoring, Raynaud’s passing ability is expected to help open space for Sacramento’s other scorers, including DeMar DeRozan and Zach Lavine, by drawing attention and kick-out opportunities. This season, Raynaud is averaging about 8.1 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1 assist per game, with shooting splits of roughly 52.5% from the field, 30.8% from three, and 81.5% at the free-throw line.
If Raynaud continues to secure a stable spot in the rotation, his counting stats should rise as he gains NBA experience. Additionally, if the Kings remain out of playoff contention as the season progresses, there could be a natural shift toward prioritizing development, giving younger players more floor time to grow.
Raynaud, drafted 42nd overall in 2025, arrived on the scene after a senior season at Stanford in which he posted 20.2 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 blocks per game.
