In a world where students are increasingly drawn to the allure of video games, it's no surprise that educators are exploring innovative ways to engage their audiences. My personal journey as a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University led me to an intriguing solution: turning my astrophysics class into a video game.
The Video Game Revolution in Education
When I was a teenager in the 1980s, I witnessed the power of video games as an educational tool. My high school classmates, who struggled with traditional tests, effortlessly recalled intricate details from their beloved games like "Dungeons and Dragons" and "Rogue." This sparked an idea that would later revolutionize my teaching approach.
As a professor, I faced a challenge: a significant number of students signed up for my lectures, but attendance was poor. Only half of the 300 enrolled students regularly showed up. Determined to address this issue, I decided to take a bold step in 2015.
The Birth of "University of Mars"
I transformed my course, "The Artistic Universe," into a video game titled "University of Mars." Instead of attending lectures, students embarked on a virtual journey, exploring astronomy through an artistic lens. The result? Most of the graduating class earned college credit by playing this unique video game course.
What makes "The Artistic Universe" particularly fascinating is its interdisciplinary nature. Students "study abroad" at the fictional University of Mars, contemplating life on another planet. They navigate the solar system, return a baby alien to its home planet, and even create their own universes. It's a blend of astronomy and art, offering a fresh perspective on the universe.
Engaging Students in a New Way
Today's students learn differently from their predecessors. They are less inclined to systematically read textbooks, opting instead for a more interactive approach. By creating a video game, I aimed to make learning fun and engaging. Students can peel away layers of the Sun or fly through spiral galaxies, all while gaining a deeper understanding of astronomy.
One critical lesson from this course is the power of storytelling. Playing a video game immerses students in a narrative, encouraging them to imagine life beyond Earth. It's a humbling experience, realizing that life could exist in various forms across the vast universe. The course prompts students to reflect on their place in the cosmos and consider the bigger questions: Where did our universe come from? What's next?
Creative Assignments and Mini-Games
After playing "University of Mars," students engage in creative writing and visual art assignments. They write letters, journal entries, and even compose original songs inspired by their virtual experiences. One assignment explores the first human encounter with an alien, while another delves into the concept of a collective consciousness and the trade-off between individuality and immortality.
Art projects include designing their own planets and aliens, and transforming black-and-white Hubble images into colorful masterpieces. These creative endeavors allow students to reconnect with their artistic side, often set aside during their academic pursuits.

While students may not remember the game's details a decade later, I hope they carry the feeling of awe and wonder. The "University of Mars" experience offers a unique perspective on life, providing comfort and familiarity. It's a reminder that learning can be fun and engaging, and that the universe is a vast and fascinating place.
In my opinion, this unconventional approach to teaching is a testament to the power of innovation in education. By embracing new technologies and thinking outside the box, we can inspire and engage students in ways that traditional methods might not.
