"The team ran out under fire," Pearce said, "trying to clear the children from the playground while the gunmen were still firing. They managed to get the children inside."
The lifesavers and volunteers on the scene, numbering around 30, were a result of a shift change at North Bondi and a Christmas party at Bondi Bathers. Their quick response and coordination were vital.
Both clubs ran out of medical supplies and trauma kits, but the lifesavers triaged victims and applied hundreds of bandages as they waited for ambulances. Thankfully, none of the volunteer lifeguards or lifesavers were injured, but the emotional toll was significant.
"They're extremely traumatized," Pearce acknowledged. Counseling was provided, and further support sessions were scheduled to help them cope.
Volunteer lifeguard Trent Tur shared his experience with Nine News. He was on a break, enjoying a surf, when he heard the shots. He swam to shore, using his surfboard as a shield, and then ran to the playground, urging people to hide. The memories of that day are still raw.
"There was blood everywhere... It was the worst feeling,"
Tur's words highlight the selflessness of these individuals, who are always ready to put themselves in harm's way to help others.
Anthony "Harries" Carroll, another Bondi Rescue lifeguard and TV star, praised the heroism of his colleagues. He was in the city doing charity work when the massacre occurred, but he received an outpouring of support from around the world.
"There were heroic acts of courage from everyone, from my mates in blue, through to the local volunteer lifesavers, and the local community members, all doing whatever they could to preserve human life down here,"
